Jack Nicholson in Batman (1989)

Jack Nicholson’s Joker in Batman (1989) became a burlesque of the Jack persona, including his mania for total control.  At one point, the Joker excuses his murder and mayhem on ground that he is an artist, not a killer.  in Jack and Burton’s first private conversation after Jack too the part, he told Burton, “Remember it’s dark.  Just like basketball, it’s night comedy.” “He can come up with different approaches to a scene time after time, and I’d find myself wanting to do extra takes just to see what he would do,” said Burton.  It was Jack who came up with he Joker’s evil non sequitur “Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?” and Jack who counseled his co-stars Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger to become one with their costumes: “Let the wardrobe do the acting, kids.”  Jack was so taken with his own duds that he paid $70,000 to keep them once the twelve-week production was over: twenty-five shirts, six suits, and a dozen hats, all in various shades of orange, purple, and turquoise.  Price was no object.  At the end of a week’s shooting, Jack reportedly turned to another cast member and said, “Ah-well, that’s another Matisse.”
